<title>General</title>
<para>S1000D is an international specification for the procurement and production of technical publications. It is an <acronym acronymType="at01"><acronymTerm>XML</acronymTerm><acronymDefinition id="acrXML">Extensible Markup Language</acronymDefinition></acronym> specification for preparing, managing, and using equipment maintenance and operations information. It was initially developed by the <acronym acronymType="at01"><acronymTerm>ASD</acronymTerm><acronymDefinition id="acrASD">AeroSpace Defence Industries Association of Europe</acronymDefinition></acronym> for use with <acronym acronymType="at02"><acronymTerm>military aircraft</acronymTerm><acronymDefinition id="acrMilitaryAircraft">Any fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft that is operated by a legal or insurrectionary armed service of any type</acronymDefinition></acronym>. The specification has since been modified for use with land, sea, and commercial equipment. S1000D is part of the S-Series of ILS specifications.</para>
<para>S1000D is maintained by the S1000D Steering Committee, which includes board members from <acronymTerm internalRefId="acrASD">ASD</acronymTerm>, the United States' <acronym acronymType="at01"><acronymTerm>AIA</acronymTerm><acronymDefinition id="acrAIA">Aerospace Industries Association</acronymDefinition></acronym>, and the <acronym acronymType="at01"><acronymTerm>ATA</acronymTerm><acronymDefinition id="acrATA">Air Transport Association</acronymDefinition></acronym>, along with national industry and defence representatives from most of the countries currently using the specification.</para>
